Process is what happens after a stream is in and before a player takes it. Stay on a transmux when the formats allow it. Transcode when the next protocol cannot take the codec.

Transmux

Transmuxing changes the protocol or the container and leaves the encoded media in place. Use it when the ingest codec is one the egress can play. It keeps the latency and the CPU cost of a copy.

Transcode

Vasl transcodes audio and video when the two sides disagree on the codec. A browser on AV1 and an RTMP destination that wants H.264 is the usual case. Opus, AV1, and H.264 are the codecs called out for the WebRTC path. Other ingests follow the same rule: convert when the next hop cannot accept what arrived.
ABR, SVC, and simulcast are planned for a later release. Document a single rendition until those ship.

Recording

MP4 and HLS files, plus a rewind window while the session is live.

Thumbnails

Poster frames and sprite sheets so a player can scrub.
Audio level, transcode, and mix are per output when the room has more than one source. Cue points and captions travel with the picture so your app can show them. Your product reads those events through the API.
