# RTMP

> Publish from OBS, vMix, Wirecast, and hardware encoders.

Use RTMP when the encoder on the desk already publishes that way. OBS, vMix, Wirecast, and common hardware encoders all fit.

Point the encoder at Vasl with a stream key. Vasl takes the contribution onto the same install as WebRTC and SRT. Transmux when the playback protocol can keep the codec. Transcode when it cannot. See [Process](/process).

For a long or lossy path into the building, prefer [SRT](/publish/srt) for the contribution and keep RTMP for the gear that already speaks it. You can also [restream](/play/restream) the program onward over RTMP.
