# Files and URLs

> Play a file you already have, or pull a stream from an address.

Two ingest paths start from media that is already somewhere else.

## A file

VOD is a file served from the same install as the live path. Use it when the session needs a clip you already have, on the same server that is taking the live cameras.

## A URL

Pull a stream that is already published at an address Vasl can reach. Use it when another system is the origin and you want that picture in the same pipeline for playback, recording, or restream.

Both paths can be recorded and played with the same egress set as a live publish. See [Play](/play) and [Recording](/recording).
